Programmable Logic Essentials: Sequential Logic, is the second of a two volume set.

The first, Programmable Logic Essentials: Combinational Logic presents the basic introductory concepts of circuits that do not contain any memory, in a uniquely integrated manner.

The present volume completes the topical coverage required for an introductory digital logic course.

Chapter 1 introduces the most basic memory element, the latch, and then proceeds with an in depth coverage of flip-flops and registers. These topics are prerequisite to the comprehensive examination of modern PLDs.

Chapter 2 reviews SPLD concepts from the first volume, and then investigates the features of the popular PALCE22V10 as a representative example. Before proceeding to CPLD and FPGA material, pertinent topics in semiconductor physics and fabrication techniques are examined, including NMOS, PMOS and CMOS. Without this background, it is impossible to discern the advantages and disadvantages and unique features of the various modern devices, as discussed in the literature. The CUPL hardware description language is then thoroughly covered. Various examples are considered which implement foundational applications of combinational logic and, to wrap up the chapter coverage, a parallel load shift register is designed.

Chapter 3 introduces the topic of state machines. The design and analysis of various counters is followed by comprehensive coverage of Moore and Mealy machines which are implemented in the PALCE22V10 SPLD.

The two volumes are separate for practical reasons. Being workbook style compilations, their size is convenient for classroom use, and the fold-back feature of coil binding makes them easier to write in. Numerous exercises are interspersed throughout the text with solutions contained at the end of each chapter. These can be utilized in the classroom to verify comprehension of each topic as it is being covered.
