Programmable Logic: Sequential - Introductory digital logic concepts using the latest PLD technology
by Jack D. Waller
Programmable Logic: Sequential Text
Programmable Logic Essentials: Combinational Logic and Sequential Logic, concisely present programmable logic concepts that are most pertinent as prerequisite to more advanced digital and computer courses. Topics are presented logically with the support of exercises that are an integral part of the concept being developed. Altera Quartus II, V9 (free down-loadable web software) and the DE-2 FPGA kit are used as the basis for practical programming projects.
A practice assignment and solution as well as a "to be handed in" assignment are included with each chapter. The books are useful as a self-teaching tool or, being relatively compact and coil bound, they can be used very effectively in the classroom. The instructor can use the in-text exercises to confirm understanding. The student actually solves the problem right in their text, while having the solution for security at the end of the chapter. Students responded very positively to this.
Programmable logic device concepts are presented throughout the books so that the principles of operation and basic characteristics will be well understood prior to becoming involved with a hardware description language (HDL). As well, Chapter 5, Book 2 gives a very comprehensive coverage of SPLD, CPLD and FPGA architectures.
From both a pedagogical and practical laboratory standpoint the older discrete logic gates and MSI devices are still useful in the early stages of learning. However, the final goal is to acquire the ability to program PLDs. Book 1, Combinational Logic, introduces simple Quartus II projects early on. Book 2, Sequential Logic, moves to a higher level, incorporating more advanced projects such as a 99 second timer, a digital alarm clock and a dual loop timed state machine.
